SummerFest Sidewalk Sales Wrap Up
SummerFest Sidewalk Sales went off without a hitch on Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13 and a good time was had by all and money was raised for the Greenfield Recreation Department. We had over forty local merchants and outside vendors set up along Main Street and we all enjoyed music from the Equalites on Friday and Devlin Miles Band on Saturday. SummerFest visitors also got to see demonstrations from Celtic Heels, MEGAdance Zumba Fitness, Hooping Harmony, and Skate Greenfield, all in the middle of the street thanks to the street closing we had on Main from Federal to Wells on Saturday. We also had the fabulous Foster's Pie Eating Contest (see below) and kids and adults alike took advantage of the many chalk stations along Main to create art in the street.
As if that wasn't enough we had the dunking booth! Big thanks go to the folks who helped us raise money for Greenfield Rec by volunteering to get soaking wet: Attorney Isaac Mass, The Recorder's Rich Fahey, Jeff Tirrell of WHAI/Bear Country, the Rotary's Penny Ricketts, Lisa Davol of Turners Falls RiverCulture and Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, Town Council President Mark Wisnewski, Mayor Bill Martin, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County's Danielle Letourneau-Therrien, Hope & Olive and Magpie's Jim Zaccara, Greenfield Police Officer Chris Rowell, and yours truly, GBA Coordinator Caitlin von Schmidt. And Honorable Mention to Representative Paul Mark who would've been dunked if the booth hadn't malfunctioned right before his stint!
We couldn't have made SummerFest Sidewalk Sales happen without the help and support of Mayor Martin, the DPW, and the Police and Fire Departments. Many thanks to all of them and also to everyone else who helped make this such a successful event, including all of our wonderful local merchants!

Foster's Pie Eating Contest!

There was tough competition at the Foster's Pie Eating Contest at SummerFest Sidewalk Sales! It was cruel to make folks rush through the delicious chocolate cream pies that Foster's donated but it had to be done. In only a matter of minutes, winner Brandon Long, co-owner of Antonio's Pizza, wolfed down a whole pie and then in true showboating fashion, started munching on his neighbor's. Congratulations to Brandon, who won a great prize package of gift certificates to Greenfield Grille, Smithsonian Café, and Mesa Verde. Hope you saved a little room, Brandon!

Fun at GRF!
The GBA tent ended up right near the GRF merchandise tent this year (thanks again, Bob Pura!) and we sold a bunch of green eggs to both young and old. Hope we aren't creating a whole new generation of gamblers! ;) We got to see lots of happy people enjoying the Festival and we even got to enjoy a bit ourselves. We're always impressed with the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce's ability to make such a gigantic event run so smoothly and frankly, after SummerFest, we were ready to take a back seat!
Thanks go out to the wonderful volunteers who helped sell the eggs during the weekend - Elizabeth Fisk of WHAI/Bear Country, Danielle Letourneau-Therrien and Meg Palmeri of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Franklin County, Jd Hairston and Anika Balaconis of the Brass Buckle, George Gohl of Greenfield Garden Cinemas, Ari Pliskin of Stone Soup Café, Hillary Hoffman of the Town Council, local artist David Longey, and Nancy Pretto of People's United Bank.
As the weekend ended, I chased the balloons back to my house near downtown Greenfield, where I and my family got to see them drift peacefully overhead as they floated toward Deerfield. See you next year, Green River Festival!

I don't like to be the bearer of bad tidings but here we are at the last day of July and you know what that means - soon you'll be packing away those white shoes because it will be Labor Day. And what amazing event comes every year hard on the heels of Labor Day? Why the Franklin County Fair, of course! You still have time to enter your best jam, quilt, painting, cow, or other potentially prize-winning item for a chance at a ribbon; go here for more info.

And in case you were wondering who designed this year's poster, it was I, Coordinator Caitlin. Viva la Franklin County Fair!
